Intersectional Practice: Stephon Alexander, Gina Gibney, & Laura Splan in Conversation

Across various programs, Laura Splan, Stephon Alexander and Gina Gibney have pushed the boundaries of artistic intersections with science. Splan’s collaboration with Adam Lamson, a theoretical biophysicist, was one of the Simons Foundation’s entry points into fostering artistic exchange, and laid the blueprint for the Triangle Program. Alexander’s organization, SoundPlusScience, highlights the link between music and physics for young people. Gibney pioneered Open Interval as a residency at her dance center, and she continues to support collaborations among choreographers and researchers. Beyond these Simons Foundation–supported projects, all three have a distinct point of view on the value of unfettered exploration, and of making space to sit with mystery.

Simons Foundation

The Simons Foundation’s mission is to advance the frontiers of research in mathematics and the basic sciences. Since its founding in 1994 by Jim and Marilyn Simons, the foundation has been a champion of basic science through grant funding, support for research and public engagement. We believe in asking big questions and providing sustained support to researchers working to unravel the mysteries of the universe.

The Simons Foundation’s Science, Society & Culture division provides opportunities for all people to forge a connection to science. Through its broad portfolio of programs, the division works to inspire a feeling of awe, wonder and belonging. It supports programs that reflect the beauty of process, the importance of innovation and the transformative power of always asking “Why?”
