‍black and white video loop with stereo sound
exhibited as single-channel video and as a series of individual single-channel loops
TRT: 23 minutes

“Qualitative Analysis“ samples footage from Roger Corman's science fiction horror film “The Wasp Woman“ (1960).  The video explores moments in the film that exemplify classic science fiction tropes such as the mad scientist and unnatural transformation.  The manipulation of the sound and imagery highlight an underlying narrative that examines obsession with youth and the “medicalization” of beauty.  Its dystopian themes are distilled down to simple gestures and dramatic facial expressions through repetition, manipulation of speed, and uncanny juxtapositions.
