Termination Sequences

2020
Zoom recordings of live improvised guitar performances by biotech workers and scientists

Termination Sequence (Into the Void)
Zoom sound recording of live improvised electric guitar performance by Frank Masciocchi
TRT: 11 minutes

Termination Sequence (Awkward Goodbye)
Zoom video and sound recording of live acoustic guitar performance by Joseph Rucker
TRT: 1 minute 22 seconds

Termination Sequences is a series of remote sound recordings made by prompting biotech workers and scientists to "play 'A' on guitar 33 times", the number of adenine nucleotides at the end of the coronavirus mRNA “termination sequence” which signals transcription to stop. The recordings, created with Zoom video conferencing, served as soundscapes for the Unraveling exhibition at BioBAT Art Space.

Termination Sequence (Into the Void) is a recording of a live improvised electric guitar performance by Frank Masciocchi created in Summer of 2020. "Into the Void" is a nod to the Black Sabbath song about utopian ideas of escaping a hopelessly dystopian planet Earth in search of "Love upon a land a world unknown". Masciocchi is a musician as well as the lab instrumentation engineer at biotech company Integral Molecular where he is responsible for installation, calibration and maintenance of lab equipment.

Termination Sequence (Awkward Goodbye) is a recording of a live acoustic guitar performance by scientist and guitarist, Joseph Rucker. Recorded in Summer of 2020, the title "Awkward Goodbye" refers to the  uncomfortable social dynamics of the still unfamiliar (to most) video conferencing platforms. Rucker is a biochemist whose research focuses on membrane proteins, antibodies, and viruses. He co-founded Integral Molecular where he has been the inventor of patents and is the principal investigator on NIH-funded projects.
