Material Expressions No. 1 is a sculptural endurance performance with a motorized sound sculpture that is actuated by electromyography (EMG). A modified music box apparatus plays Mozart's Wiegenlied as the performer flexes their bicep. EMG electrodes measuring levels of electricity in the bicep activate a motor that turns the drum cylinder on the music box.
