Manufractured

Manufractured: The Conspicuous Transformation of Everyday Objects

This volume reveals a major trend taking place today in visual and material culture—the radical appropriation of consumer goods as raw material for art- and object-making. A growing number of artists, craftspeople, and designers are realigning traditional craft practices with already manufactured objects and materials to marry the uniquely handmade with the uniformly mass-produced. Published with the 2008 exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Craft, Portland, OR. By Steven Skov Holt / Mara Holt Skov

Pricked

Pricked: Extreme Embroidery, Museum of Arts and Design, New York, NY

The second catalog in the MAD Process and Materials series, this volume compliments Radical Lace and Subversive Knitting. The works illustrated in color include language-based art based on the sampler tradition, provocative political imagery, and works that deal with the human body and memory. Artists featured also embroider unusual materials, ranging from found woolen gloves to stone. These works are definitely not your mother’s tea towels! This publication features an essay by the curator David McFadden.

Specimen

Specimen: Representing the Natural World

In the 19th century a thirst for information about the natural world was rampant among the general populace, from dedicated scientists to avid amateurs. This exhibition addresses the pervasive influence of ‘natural history’ inspired aesthetics and methodologies on contemporary artists. Contemporary artworks will be displayed alongside historic works. Published with the exhibition at Paul Robeson Galleries, 2009. By Anonda Bell, Eugene Kaplan, Peter Singer

Biological Imperative

Biological Imperative, Gallery Aferro

Structured around what the Tissue Culture and Art Project has called “cultural perceptions of life,” Biological Imperative freely mixes ideas of partial personhood, the possibilities of regeneration, multiples, fecundity, the semi-living, and the undead (things that just won’t die.) The exhibition posits linkage between disparate references such as (but not limited to) the undying popularity of the zombie genre, rabbit imagery, pirate radio and bioethical quandaries. Published 2008.
